• Backyard Burn Season Is About to End in SLO County, Here's When (edhat.com) — If you live in Avila Beach, you’re in an area that’s ineligible for backyard burn permits, and a countywide suspension on residential burning begins May 4 at 8 a.m. Officials cite rising fire danger, outline where burning is allowed, and remind residents that only properly maintained campfires in permitted locations are still okay as fire season ramps up.
   

• New $85 million Highway 101 project aims to ease Pismo Beach traffic (ksby.com) — Drivers from Avila Beach will see big changes on Highway 101 as a new southbound lane is built from Avila Beach Drive to past Price Canyon Road, aimed at easing chronic congestion. The $85 million Five Cities Project, tied to the recently finished Avila Beach roundabout, has begun construction and will run through about 2028, bringing temporary delays but long-term traffic relief.
   

• How a lavender farmer and a musician launched a recording studio in SLO County (sanluisobispo.com) — A new recording studio has quietly opened in a barn on a lavender farm tucked between San Luis Obispo and Avila Beach, adding a creative resource just up the road from town. Lavender farmer Finney Smith and musician Hunter Nakazono teamed up to turn a rundown barn into Shiahma Recording Studio, which now hosts local acts, supports youth through a nonprofit partnership, and powers Nakazono’s Heavy Crush Records label.
