Elevated Fire Weather In LA County; Mild Week For Baldwin Park

The red flag warning was canceled in Orange County but was extended in LA County, in a week of fire weather and extremely dry conditions.

BALDWIN PARK, CA — Thanks to diminishing winds, a weeklong red flag warning of severe fire danger was canceled Monday in Orange, San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. In the Los Angeles metro area and San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, the red flag warning was extended in the mountains until Wednesday night.

In canceling the red flag warning in select areas, the National Weather Service noted that "elevated fire weather conditions will persist through the week due to incredibly dry air and occasionally breezy offshore flow, but the winds are not expected to be strong enough to warrant a red flag warning."

But forecasters said red flag conditions will continue in Los Angeles County mountains, the Angeles National Forest, the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area and the Santa Clarita Valley through at least 8 p.m. Wednesday. According to the NWS, humidity levels in those areas were expected to hover between 2 and 8 percent, combined with continued windy conditions.

Mountain areas could see winds of 10 to 25 mph, with gusts of up to 40 mph, forecasters said. The Santa Monica Mountain Recreation Area and Santa Clarita Valley are expected to have winds gusting up to 30 mph.
In those conditions, "if fire ignition occurs, there will be the potential for very rapid spread of wildfire ... and extreme fire behavior that could lead to a threat to life and property," the NWS warned.

Red flag warnings were also in effect in Ventura and Santa Barbara.
