Kaiser Permanente’s Commitment to Cardiac Care
A coordinated approach has made Kaiser Permanente a leader in preventing and diagnosing heart disease
At Kaiser Permanente, we’re committed to the highest standards of cardiac care. Our board-certified specialists and multidisciplinary care teams are pioneering new ways to prevent, detect, and treat illnesses of the heart and blood vessels. Our groundbreaking treatment and research is improving the health of our patients and communities today and well into the future.
According to the American Heart Association, every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. Most heart problems can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices. The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise or walking most days of the week.
“Awareness is a key factor in making these choices,” says Timothy Cotter, MD, chief of Cardiology, Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center. “Lifestyle changes in diet, exercise, weight loss, smoking cessation, and limiting alcohol use can help lower blood pressure and prevent serious illness.”

To help members make better lifestyle choices, Kaiser Permanente provides health education courses, preventative screening reminders, and easily accessible, highly coordinated care options for quicker, better diagnosis.
High blood pressure is known as the silent killer because so many people don’t know they have it. If left untreated, it can damage blood vessels and lead to stroke and heart attack. To reduce heart attacks and strokes, Kaiser Permanente is aggressively treating people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes in order to lower their future risk. Kaiser Permanente is in the top 5 percent in the nation when it comes to controlling high blood pressure for patients with cardiovascular conditions.

If the rest of the U.S. managed the blood pressure of hypertensive patients as well as Kaiser Permanente does, many thousands of heart attacks and strokes could be prevented each year, and several hundred thousand deaths could be prevented over 10 years.
Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park has been recognized by The Joint Commission and has received specialty certification in Advanced Heart Failure and in Advanced Stroke Care.
The medical center has also received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines- Heart Failure Silver Plus Achievement Award, the Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award, and was recognized on the Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll.
“These achievements reflect the high standard of cardiac care and stroke care provided on a consistent basis through the collective work of a team of physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff,” explains Dr. Cotter. “This coordinated approach has made Kaiser Permanente a leader in preventing and diagnosing heart disease.”
From providing education and care, to preventing heart disease, to treating patients with advanced heart failure, Kaiser Permanente continues to lead the way in heart health. For more information, visit kp.org/baldwinpark.
