1 Dies As Car Plummets 200 Feet Off Beaumont Roadway

The body of a woman is believed to be inside the vehicle that is all but unreachable, 230 feet below the road, officials say.

BEAUMONT, CA —A helicopter discovered a deadly crash Thursday, and a car that plummeted more than 200 feet over the side of Lambs Canyon Road near Gilman Springs Road, officials have confirmed. The body of a woman was believed to be behind the wheel, and no other people were inside the vehicle, according to California Highway Patrol dispatchers.

The Riverside County Coroner was called to the scene as officers worked on the safe recovery of the car and the victim.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, a crashed Gray Honda CRV was spotted in a deep ravine by a Riverside County Sheriff's Department helicopter flying overhead.

"At some point, the car was traveling southbound on Lambs Canyon Road at a high rate of speed and went over the side of the road just north of Gilman Springs Road," Torres said.

The crash specifics remained unclear, as no witnesses saw the car go over the side, and it was impossible to see the car from the road due to the deep ravine, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jonathan Torres.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and determined the vehicle was "not recoverable," as there was rough terrain between the roadway and where it came to rest.

Traffic was only lightly impacted due to emergency vehicles on the shoulder.
