Banning Jail Inmate Dies After Suffering 'Medical Emergency'

Officials say the person died at a local hospital.

An inmate at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning died this week after suffering an unspecified medical emergency.

At around 5:35 a.m. Monday, jail officials were alerted to a medical emergency involving the inmate, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Richard Beatty said in a news release.

“The inmate was transported to an area hospital where additional medical treatment was rendered,” he said. “The inmate did not respond to the medical treatment and passed away at 9:52 a.m.”

Foul play is not suspected, Beatty said.

No information was available as to what the inmate had been jailed for.

Just last week, another inmate died at the jail-- but in that case, foul play is suspected.
