A colleague within the district nominated Astrachan for his dedication to students and his time served as interim superintendent. “While he was acting superintendent, he developed the ‘Our Kids First’ and ‘Get to Know Kids’ efforts, which have reduced gang problems in the middle and high school,” says Astrachan’s colleague. “He works very hard in his ongoing effort to hire the best staff for our school sites, but he also works endlessly with parents and students through rough situations and to make sure kids stay in school.”
Each school year, the LifeChanger of the Year program receives hundreds of nominations. Ten winners are selected by the selection committee to receive cash awards that are split between the individual winner and their school. The national Grand Prize award is $10,000. The top three winners are also honored at a national awards ceremony.
