A proposal to ask Banning voters to increase the sales tax rate in the city was unanimously shot down by the City Council on Monday, Sept. 11.

Under the proposal, voters would have been asked to pay more sales tax to increase the city budget to boost public safety.
Voters in four Riverside County cities approved 1 percentage point increases in November, adding one cent to every dollar spent on taxable items.

The Banning proposal did not specify an amount, but a staff report indicated that a .5 percentage point increase would bring in an additional $1.2 million annually.
Under state law, tax increases must be approved by voters.
