Banning Unified School District Approves 11 More Layoffs

These layoffs of classified employees come on the heels of the layoffs of 39 teachers in the district.

The Banning Unified School District has approved the layoffs of more workers-- this time, of classified employees.

The topic was up for vote in Monday night's special board meeting.  

Though slightly amended, the resolution passed 3-1, with board member Alex Cassadas voting against the cuts, and board member Wendell Bainter absent, according to district officials.

A total of 14 positions will now be cut, and another four reduced.  However three of those cut positions are currently vacant, and a fourth may soon be, pending a retirement, officials from the superintendent's office said.

Jobs on the chopping block initially included:

  • One (1) six (6) hours per day Instructional Aide
  • Three (3) six (6) hours per day In-School Intervention Aides
  • Three (3) eight (8) hours per day Clerks
  • One (1) six (6) hours per day Clerk
  • One (1) five (5) hours per day Clerk--Testing Support
  • One (1) three (3) hours per day Clerk--Centralized Registration
  • One (1) five (5) hours per day Library Media Clerk
  • One (1) eight (8) hours per day Maintenance Worker
  • One (1) eight (8) hours per day Bus Driver/Trainer
  • One (1) eight (8) hours per day Computer Tech

Another four jobs were not cut, however hours are proposed to be reduced for one "warehouse person," from full time 12 months a year, to 10 months a year.  Three health aides may also see a cut in hours, from six to four hours a day, according to the board resolution.

The amendment applied to the bus driver position-- as the 8 hour bus driver/trainer position was amended to one 5 hour bus driver, the district told Banning-Beaumont Patch.

The resolution states the layoffs "...shall become effective forty-five (45) days after notice is given to affected employees subject to negotiations to the extent required by law."
