Beaumont Library Early Literacy Outreach Schedule Begins August 15

Beaumont Library District’s “Ready to Read” van, which provides early literacy outreach services for children from birth to 5 years of age and their caregivers, will be back on the road August 15 following a summer break in schedule.

This compact “bookmobile” is stocked with over 2,000 items, mostly books, and was funded through a $90,000 federal Library Services and Technology Act grant in 2012. In its fourth year of operation, the vehicle will continue its regular circuit visiting home daycare providers, daycare centers, Head Start classes, and community locations.

Library staff provide engaging and educational story times at each location, as well as deposit collections of library materials, including subject-themed play kits that cover topics like the alphabet, numbers, colors, music, safety, etc.

Studies show that exposure to early literacy opportunities, such as those provided through BLD’s regular in-library preschool programs, which begin September 6, and via the “Ready to Read” van, help ensure that children can enter kindergarten equipped with the skills they need to learn and be successful in school.

Parents and their young children are invited to attend the public story times held at 11:30 a.m. on Mondays at the Chatigny Community Center beginning September 12, at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Noble Creek Community Center beginning September 6, and at 9 a.m. on Fridays at Petco beginning September 9. Visits are not normally scheduled on fifth Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays of the month, on holidays, or during school breaks.
