Beaumont's Animal Shelter Services Expanding Into 'Building E' At $460K Cost

Beauont's city council agreed to expand the animal shelter on city grounds. Here's what's coming for the Animal Shelter.

BEAUMONT, CA — The City of Beaumont is expanding its Animal Shelter Services by broadening its footprint in existing buildings, a spokesperson from the city shared this week. This, after a Feb. 3 city council session, gave preliminary approval for the expansion project.

"Building E is soon to be the home of the expanded animal shelter, on the north side of City Hall. This expansion allows animal services to care for more animals, focusing on intake, treatment, evaluation, and adoption," Sarah Lower, Beaumont's Support Services Supervisor, said in a recent video news release.

Building E is 5,790 square feet and will be renovated into an operational shelter. The cost of the project was tagged at $460,000 by the end of the current fiscal year, and Public Works estimated Phase one of the building renovation to cost $300,000. The remainder would be to "outfit the facility with 24 new kennels, quoted at $160,000, according to the city council agenda. The ongoing operational costs of the shelter had not yet been determined at that meeting and would be determined after consultation with animal sheltering professionals.

"The addition of a local shelter would offer more positive placement opportunities for pets well beyond our first adoption that took place in January, 2026," she told the Council at the Feb. 3 meeting.

This expansion is considered an interim solution, according to the Feb. 3 staff report. With low kennel capacity and resource constraints, intaking animals at the current Beaumont animal services center has been what Lower called "a delicately balanced operation."

"Since our previous contract ended in Nov. 2024, Beaumont's animal control has responded to over 2,500 calls for service," Lower said. "Our team often handles lost-and-found pets, and with limited space, bringing in new animals is a careful balancing act.

Phase one transforms the north end of Building E into a fully operational animal shelter, featuring a public lobby, outdoor yard, clinic area and expanded space for 24 kennels.

"This expansion quadruples the size of our current facility," she said. Beaumont's animal services remain a vital resource for our residents and their pets."

Meanwhile, In December 2025, the City of Beaumont entered into an MOU with the surrounding communities to seek a regional animal shelter solution. While that MOU and its plans remained underway as of the Feb. 3 meeting, the nature of such an undertaking is an extended process.
