As the sun rises Thursday morning in California, 14 local families’ lives are forever changed. As most people are beginning to plan for the holidays, these families are planning funerals.
Two gunmen who “were dressed and equipped” ripped their lives apart.
A day after tragedy struck the city of San Bernardino, the story is still unfolding. Authorities don’t have the answers yet as to why this all occurred; perhaps, they never will. But for now, here’s what we know about the alleged shooters and the terror police say they’re responsible for:
- 14 people died in Wednesday’s mass shooting. Another 17 were injured.
- The shooters have been identified by police as Syed Rizwan Farook 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27. The two were married, and had a young baby together.
- Both shooters died in a gun battle with police, about four hours after the shooting at Inland Regional Center.
- Farook was born in the United States.
- Farook worked for San Bernardino’s public health department for the last five years. Records indicate he earned some $52,000 a year in his job.
- The man’s father told the NY Daily News that his son had become very religious in recent years: “He was very religious. He would go to work, come back, go to pray, come back. He’s Muslim.”
- Farook had recently traveled to Saudia Arabia to marry Malik, who he met online, the LA Times reports.
- FBI officials say Malik was in the U.S. on a K-1 Visa, and held a Pakistani passport.
- The vehicle the two were driving was a rented SUV.
As for the identities of those killed in the shootings, officials have not released their names yet.
“We are continuing to make family notifications and we hope to release victim’s names later today,” the sheriff’s office said Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
