The county and three other jurisdictions have been picked to receive grant funding totaling just over $1 million.
RIVERSIDE, CA - Riverside County will receive a $133,584 state grant for a project that involves using discarded tires to trap methane gas in landfills to lessen its impact on the environment, it was announced today.
The California Department of Resources Recycling & Recovery selected the county and three other jurisdictions to receive grant funding totaling just over $1 million.

Riverside County's allocation will support efforts to create landfill bedding with shredded rubber. The expended tires will be placed around the outlets of gas wells that produce methane from decomposing trash. According to state officials, methane is a greenhouse gas that poses an atmospheric risk.
The other entities designated grant funds are the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority, Santa Barbara County and Solano County.
