COVID Hospitalizations Spike In Riverside County

Coronavirus hospitalizations in Riverside County are going up in keeping with a spike in new cases fueled by the Omicron variant.

RIVERSIDE, CA — The number of Riverside County residents hospitalized with the coronavirus rose to 545 Sunday, up from 510 on Saturday, according to the latest state figures.

The number of those patients in intensive care fell from 94 to 93.

Riverside County officials said the aggregate number of COVID cases recorded since the public health documentation period began in March 2020 was 399,023 as of late last week.

The county does not update COVID data on weekends, and the next update is expected Monday.

On Thursday, the Riverside University Health System reported that a total 5,585 deaths from virus-related complications have been recorded in the past 21 months. The fatalities are trailing indicators because of delays processing death certificates and can go back weeks, according to health officials.

The number of known active virus cases in the county based on available data was 9,127 as of Thursday. The active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total — 399,023 — according to the county Executive Office. Verified patient recoveries countywide were 384,311.
