Firefighters Host Hands-On Training Camp For RivCo Kids
The camp is slated for June 22 through 26 at various locations in Riverside.
RIVERSIDE, CA — Riverside youths with an interest in pursuing public safety careers will gather next week for a Junior Firefighter Camp hosted by the Riverside Fire Department, whose personnel will provide hands-on learning opportunities that include instruction on first aid and how to utilize fire suppression devices.
"The Junior Firefighter Camp gives young people a unique opportunity to learn about the fire service while building practical skills that can help them respond confidently in emergency situations," RFD Chief Steve McKinster said. "We appreciate our ongoing partnership with the Riverside City Firefighters Association Local 1067 and the Riverside City Firefighters Foundation, whose support helps make this valuable program available to Riverside families."
The camp is slated for June 22-26 at various locations in the city. Dozens of youths ages 10-13 are slated to participate, according to camp coordinator fire Capt. Joshua Fudge. He said the first camp was held last week, and the one on tap for next week will be the last for 2026.

All costs for participants are waived, thanks to grants by the firefighters' union and the foundation, officials said.
Some of the activities planned daily include "stop-the-bleed" training, proper use of extinguishers, how to handle a live fire hose, demonstrations on deployment of the "jaws of life," search-and-rescue missions and team coordination during emergencies.

There will be fire engines and trucks on display, talks by veteran firefighters and station tours.
The two camps combined are set to serve about 100 youths, Fudge said.
"Now in its third year, the Junior Firefighter Camp continues to grow in popularity, introducing Riverside youth to fire service careers, emergency preparedness and the importance of community service," he said.
