Get Out: Five Ideas For Your Weekend

Celebrate National Public Lands Day with hiking and helping.

Be impressed with humanity this weekend. Cheer a neighbor’s wicked guitar solo, gaze in awe at our protected national parks, laugh hysterically at talented comedians, wipe away a tear at a sweet movie and take in the sparkle as dancers cha-cha for a great cause.

Our goal is to make the Get Out planner as reliable as possible, but keep in mind, some events change at the last minute. We advise calling ahead just in case.

When/Where: 7-9 p.m. Friday nights at Music and Voice, 635 Veile Ave, Beaumont

Why Go: Every Friday night, Music and Voice hosts jam sessions open to all instruments and styles. It's a fun way to play, engage, improvise, and improve your chops while playing with others. Develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply come and listen to the local talent. Participants must be 13 or older, no instruments are provided. 

Pricing: $6 in advance or $10 at the door

When/Where: This Saturday in national forests and other public lands

Why Go: Entrance fees will be waived in national forests and other public lands across the country today in recognition of National Public Lands Day. Not only can you explore your favorite park for free, you can practice being a good steward by volunteering for one of the many projects organized especially for the occasion. Service projects may range from maintaining trails to cleaning waterways to sprucing up campgrounds. Use this map to find a volunteer opportunity near you.

4. “DOLPHIN TALE”

Why Go: This touching film tells the true story of Winter, a dolphin who is fitted with a prosthetic tale after she loses her own in a crab trap. The film stars Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr. and Kris Kristofferson. Winter plays herself!

When/Where: Cocktails start at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday at The Palm Springs Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros, Palm Springs

Why Go:  Local stars pair up with professional dancers to benefit Desert AIDS Project. 

Star dancers include Elizabeth Beaubien, co-anchor of the KMIR-6 News; Jason Dibler, general manager of the ACE Hotel & Swim Club; and Ginger Jeffries, KESQ-3 chief meteorologist. Celebrity judges include Grammy-winner Thelma Houston, Emmy-winner Leslie Jordan ("The Help," "Will & Grace"), and Italo Elgueta ("High School Musical" 2 and 3) who is also a professional dancer featured on the ABC hit, “Dancing with the Stars.”

Pricing: General admission is $40, VIP seating (including a cocktail and appetizers) is $100
