A National Weather Service heat advisory for the Coachella Valley and the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning was scheduled to expire at 8 p.m.

“High pressure centered over Southern Arizona will expand through this evening bringing another very hot day across the Coachella Valley and the San Diego County deserts,” according to the weather service. “Maximum temperatures will be about 10 degrees above normal (Wednesday), with slight cooling beginning Thursday with high temperatures a few degrees lower as the high weakens and humidity increases.”

Forecasters said high temperatures would put residents and visitors at risk for heat-related illnesses.

Frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas are recommended for those who work outside, who were urged to dress in lightweight and loose clothing and drink plenty of water. Anyone overcome by the heat should be moved to a cooler and shaded location. Paramedics should be called for anyone showing signs of heat stroke.

“Take precautions if you work or spend time outside,” forecasters said. “When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.”
