BANNING, CA — Banning and Beaumont residents began the week under an Air Quality Alert and Excessive Heat Warning, according to the National Weather Service.

The excessive heat for the Pass Area was extended to Wednesday as temperatures hover in the low 100s. Monday, residents had a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms but would be under mostly sunny skies with high of 103 degrees, according to meteorologists.

Dangerously hot conditions were expected in the San Gorgonio Pass area and Banning through Wednesday at 8 p.m.

The Air Quality Alert stemmed from windblown dust amid a spate of monsoon storms that hit the region Sunday, the NWS reported. The increase in particulate matter would be in effect for much of the Pass Area through noon Tuesday.

"In areas directly impacted by high levels of windblown dust, limit your exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed and avoiding vigorous physical activity. Run your air conditioner or an air purifier. If temperatures allow, avoid using whole house fans or swamp coolers that bring in outside air."

Elsewhere in Riverside County, Temecula Valley residents enjoyed a brief respite from the hot weather Sunday as cloud cover brought in humidity and relieved the triple-digit temperatures. A few showers spattered the region, though desert communities saw monsoon storms along with high winds and blowing dust, the National Weather Service reported.

Over the next week, some areas of Riverside County will remain in high temperatures, the National Weather Service said, with some county valleys reaching 106 degrees by Tuesday.

A few of our mountain communities below 5,000 feet will see temperatures hovering around 100. Idyllwild will see high temperatures in the 80s, and a chance of rain Monday and Tuesday.

"Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities," NWS forecasters warned. "Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water."

In Banning this week, the National Weather Service predicts the weather would remain in the low 100s, and the hottest day would be Monday, with a high temperature of 103 degrees.
