Historical tour and talk at Beaumont Presbyterian Church

Rev. Scott Mason led the historical tour and talk and described the origins of the "rock church."

Built in 1934, the Beaumont Presbyterian Church is known by many as the “rock church,” and is a widely recognized landmark in the Pass Area. The building was constructed of stone gathered by community members locally – many of the river rocks are from the Whitewater area. Rev. Scott Mason has led the congregation for more than 20 years, and on May 9, he presented an informative historical tour and talk, which included stories for each of the colorful stained glass windows in the sanctuary as well as other details about the historical structure and its evolution, to about 30 members and friends of the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society. The event was part of the society’s “Exploring Our Heritage” series of tours and talks.

Among the historical society’s upcoming events is the traveling historical photo exhibit on display this weekend at the Gilman Ranch Wild West Festival and Western Art Show, May 18 and 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Gilman Ranch is at 1901 W. Wilson St. in Banning.

The society’s traveling exhibit will also be displayed at the Beaumont Cherry Festival, May 30 through June 2, and at the Beaumont Freedom Festival on July 4. Both events will be held at Beaumont’s Stewart Park located at 10th St. and Orange Ave.

On Thursday, June 13, the society will host Banning Mayor Art Welch and City Manager Doug Schulze to discuss the city’s historical awareness priorities. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. at the Beaumont Woman’s Club.

All friends and non-members are welcome at historical society meetings and events. Information about the society’s ongoing activities may be found on the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society Facebook page.
