BANNING, CA — An inmate housed at Banning's Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility has died less than a week after a female inmate died at Riverside's Robert Presley Detention Center.

The man, whose identity was not released, was transported by ground ambulance April 14 to a local hospital for unspecified medical treatment. He died at the hospital Sunday, according to the sheriff's department.

"There are no signs of foul play and, due to the ongoing status of the investigation, no further information is currently available," the department reported.

The female inmate at the Riverside facility was found unresponsive in her cell at 8:35 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff's department.

County jail staff performed life-saving measures, and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department crews continued the effort when they arrived at the detention center, but the woman was ultimately pronounced dead at 9: 12 p.m., the sheriff's department reported.

Because her identity was not released, it's unclear what the woman was in custody for. The sheriff's department did not disclose whether the inmate was alone in her cell when she was found unresponsive. While foul play is not suspected, the in-custody death investigation is continuing, according to the department.

Both county jails are operated by the sheriff's department.
