Local Kids are Lucky to have Grandfathers for Golf

Our local youth are fortunate to have access to a free golf program designed just for them. Grandfathers for Golf proudly says, “We bring youth to the game,” and that is exactly what they do — at no cost to families.

Through the Grandfathers for Golf Youth Program, every child receives golf lessons along with a golf shirt, hat, and a set of clubs they can call their own. All of this is provided free of charge. While the organization gladly accepts donations, its partnerships with community sponsors ensure there are no fees for kids to participate.

“Yes, there are other golf programs out there, but our goal is to remove barriers,” said one program volunteer. “We want every child who is interested to have the opportunity to learn the game, regardless of their family’s financial situation.”

Participants attend one day a week after school, where they learn the fundamentals of the game in a fun, supportive environment. Volunteers not only teach golf skills but also emphasize sportsmanship, patience, and respect.

One young golfer attended with their grandfather, who shared his appreciation for the program: “When I was a kid, there was nothing like this available for us. Golf was not something we could do. I picked it up later in life, and I was sorry I didn’t start younger. It’s a great game — not only a good sport, but the kids learn etiquette that carries over into everyday life. This is a great program!”

Parents also see the benefits beyond the golf course. “This program has given my child confidence,” said one parent. “They’re learning discipline, meeting positive role models, and spending time outdoors instead of being on a screen. And the fact that it’s free makes it even more meaningful for families like ours.”

Grandfathers for Golf has been serving youth for more than 20 years. Several alumni have gone on to play on their high school golf teams, and some have even earned college golf scholarships. For many, their journey in the sport began with this program.

“Our volunteers love seeing the kids grow,” another mentor shared. “Some start out never holding a club before, and a few years later they’re competing on school teams. Watching that transformation is incredibly rewarding.”

The organization is made up entirely of dedicated volunteers who are passionate about helping kids learn golf and develop life skills along the way. Those interested in volunteering are always welcome to join and support local youth.

Currently, the Grandfathers for Golf program is held Tuesday afternoons after school at the Golden Era Golf Course in San Jacinto.
