Mt. San Jacinto College Adds New Technology

Mt. San Jacinto College has added Remote Desktop Services to the ways in which students can engage in their studies.

Remote Desktop Services (RSD) is a technology that allows students to access software programs through the school server, which is hosted at the Menifee Valley Campus.

“RDS allows students to remote in to our server using their own computer or one at the campus in order to access software programs,” said Andre Uckert, network coordinator. “This allows them to use the most up-to-date programs without having to purchase them. There is storage allocation for each student so they don’t have to worry about losing their flash drive anymore. All their data is backed up, and the system is designed to have a high level of redundancy.”

Mark Dumas, who began as an assistant network coordinator 18 years ago, has been instrumental in bringing technology to MSJC students. He says RDS is a work in progress that has only been used by computer science and business students at this time.

“We plan to make it available to all students as early as next spring,” said Mark Dumas, ITS supervisor. “This college has always supported a separate Instructional Technology Support (ITS) department for the use of technology. Our only mission is for students and we have only one focus: instruction. It’s what is dear to our hearts. This is just the beginning. We envision this system will be as heavily and widely used as Blackboard within five years.”
