New Principal Hired for Banning High School

Banning High School has hired Doug Newton as its new principal.

Newton, of Redlands, was formerly the principal of Mesa Linda Middle School in the Adelanto Elementary School District.

“We believe that Mr. Newton has the skills and experience to work and build a staff, and work collaboratively with that staff and be a good instructional leader for our high school and district,” said Superintendent Lynne Kennedy.

Newton said the job drew upwards of 70 applicants, 12 of whom were chosen for the interview process. Those interviewed were screened by two panels, made up of parents, teachers, administrators, classified staff and school board members. The two panels then came together to make the final selection.

Kennedy said she did not have a vote.

Newton replaces John Curtis, who retired this spring. Curtis had been the principal since the 2009-2010 school year.
