Palmer Fire Near Beaumont Nearly Contained

CALIMESA, CA - About 300 firefighters remained in the foothills west of Calimesa Tuesday to guard against flareups and clear a line around the remnants of a brush fire that charred 3,874 acres. The fire was 90 percent contained, officials said Tuesday morning.

At the peak of the Palmer Fire Saturday, about 450 people were evacuated from 100 homes on the Riverside County side and nine homes on the Redlands city side in San Bernardino County, officials said.

Evacuated residents were allowed back home Sunday afternoon, and roads were reopened, officials said.

Investigators determined the fire was sparked by fireworks, according to officials. It was driven by westerly wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour amid above-average temperatures. No injuries were reported and no structures were reported damaged.
