MORENO VALLEY, CA — The city of Moreno Valley was the only place in Riverside County under a curfew early Wednesday morning, with city officials citing public safety concerns as the reason. Yet the county and the city were relatively quiet overnight.

The Moreno Valley curfew went into effect at 8 p.m. Tuesday night and was scheduled to be in force until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

In the hours leading up to the curfew, hundreds of people assembled at Moreno Valley Community Park protested the death of George Floyd by a police officer in Minnesota as Riverside County Sheriff's deputies stood by in riot gear.

For a brief period Tuesday evening, the Day Street and Frederick Street/Pigeon Pass Road ramps from the Moreno Valley (60) Freeway in Moreno Valley were closed for protest activity, Caltrans announced via Twitter shortly after 7 p.m.

The rally began at 4:30 p.m. and lasted until shortly before 8 p.m. with protesters peacefully departing the area.

Demonstrators were told at 7:45 p.m. by a sheriff's lieutenant that the 8 p.m. curfew would be imposed and if the protest continued beyond that time, an unlawful assembly would be declared, the paper said.

No arrests were immediately reported.

Another march from the park to Moreno Valley City Hall was scheduled for Friday morning.

A small group of protesters took part in a peaceful demonstration at La Quinta Community Park near Avenida Montezuma and Eisenhower Drive Tuesday, KESQ reported.

At least three dozen people walked around the park, chanting slogans, before the demonstration wrapped up around 8 p.m., according to the station.
