Staples ~ was it Ecommerce, Bulls and Bears, regardless . . . July 19th, Saturday seems to be the day Staples will close, and The Marketplace will lose an anchor store, and in the season of elections I hope this does not go under the radar. The closing of Staples simultaneously happens as KMart closes across the way, and as Albertson's Supermarket has hung on to the adjacent corner on Highland Springs.
The Marketplace has a few vacant storefronts, today I noticed a new store has come in - Beaumont Discount Mattress. The remaining anchor stores: Best Buy, Ross Dress for Less, Bed Bath and Beyond, Petco have visible storefronts, patronage, I wonder. Now that I see the closing of Staples I wonder how the remaining anchors are financially doing, so I decided to research Staples, and what led to Staples predicament.
According to a Bloomberg report Staples financial decline started before their announcement in March that they were going to be closing 225 stores. It seems we the consumer have changed our purchasing habits, and Ecommerce has become a denominator. We no longer fax, we no longer need as many print facilities, storefronts are no longer needed, if needed square footage requirements have lessened, and Amazon has become a go to market for the consumer, therefore Staples competitor. Amazons warehouses with electronic technology has taken over. Taken over with technology that has taken over the number of employees they employ, actually employees they do not employ because of the technology. So there it is, the stock market is bearish on Staples, and bullish on Amazon.
Better that Staples remain a company, close stores then lose a company altogether. My thought though, what is happening on the horizon here in the area of Banning and Beaumont. Elections are on the horizon, I am not a politician, I am a writer and this is food for thought ~ laura.
