Street Closures to Begin in Anticipation of Obama Visit

The closures will begin Friday and continue through Monday morning.

An anticipated weekend visit by President Barack Obama is prompting some street closures that will begin Friday and continue through Monday morning.

From 1 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday, the following streets will be closed:

  • Kirk Douglas Way, between Ramon and El Cielo roads; and
  • Airport Center Drive at Kirk Douglas Way.

Palm Springs International Airport can be accessed from the Tahquitz Canyon Way-El Cielo Road entrance.

The closures were announced by the Palm Springs Police Department.

But while neither the department nor the White House have confirmed Obama’s visit to the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs International Airport executive director Tom Nolan made Obama’s intentions known during a monthly meeting of the Palm Springs Airport Commission on Wednesday, The Desert Sun reported.

Obama’s precise itinerary was not disclosed, but he is believed to be arriving Saturday and leaving Sunday, the paper said.

Obama is scheduled to be in the San Francisco area Friday to speak to the U.S. Conference of Mayors and attend Democratic National Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee fundraisers.

The White House has not announced Obama’s travel plans after Friday.

Obama visited the Coachella Valley each of the past two Junes.
