Details: Suspect Killed By Deputy Gunfire At I-10 In Calimesa
The Cherry Valley Boulevard onramp at eastbound I-10 in Calimesa was closed as part of the investigation into the fatal incident.
CALIMESA, CA — A suspect who was wounded by deputy gunfire Tuesday morning in Calimesa died from his injuries, but no law enforcement personnel were hurt.
The incident began at approximately 9:09 a.m. when deputies from the Cabazon Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a man armed with a knife at a business in the 1000 block of Cherry Valley Boulevard in Calimesa.
"The suspect had already slashed the tires of two customers in the parking lot of the business before a deputy arrived on scene," according to a report from Sgt. Brandi Swan.

A deputy spotted the armed man walking nearby on the eastbound Interstate 10 onramp at Cherry Valley Boulevard. The deputy tried to get the suspect to drop the knife, including using a Taser, but was unsuccessful, Swan said.
"When the suspect advanced toward the deputy with the knife, a deputy-involved shooting occurred," the sergeant reported.

Despite life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His identity was not released pending next of kin notification.
There were no outstanding suspects, according to Swan.
The involved deputy, whose name was not released, will be placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy, the sergeant said.
The Cherry Valley Boulevard onramp remained closed for several hours during the investigation.
A separate crash incident on the eastbound side of the freeway, just west of Cherry Valley Boulevard, was reported at 11:30 a.m. but was unrelated to the shooting, the California Highway Patrol confirmed.
