Violent Criminal With Inland Empire Tie Killed By Prisoners: CDCR

Felipe Rodriguez, who​ had a violent criminal record, was attacked and killed Wednesday afternoon in a prison yard, according to officials.

FOLSOM, CA — A man serving multiple prison sentences, including life without parole, stemming from violent crimes across the Inland Empire and Los Angeles, was killed Tuesday by two inmates at Folsom's California State Prison-Sacramento, according to corrections officials.

Felipe Rodriguez, 36, was attacked at 2:50 p.m. in a prison yard at the high-security facility that houses 1,940 inmates serving long-term sentences. An "inmate-made" weapon was used in the attack, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

An ambulance was summoned but a paramedic pronounced Rodriguez dead just before 3:30 p.m., according to the state institution. The Sacramento County Coroner will determine his official cause of death.

Institution investigators identified two suspects in the attack: Selso E. Orozco Jr., 41, and Mike A. Calderon, 36.

Orozco is serving a 23-year prison sentence for first-degree robbery with the use of a firearm, second-degree robbery with the use of afirearm, abusing/endangering the health of a child with an enhancement for use of a firearm, possessing/owning a firearm by a felon or addict, and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. He was transferred to the prison from Sonoma County.

Calderon is serving a sentence of life without parole for first-degree murder and enhancements for the intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury/death and personal use of a dangerous or deadly weapon. He was transferred to the prison from Los Angeles County.

Like his alleged killers, Rodriguez had a violent record. He was admitted to the prison from San Bernardino County on Oct. 14, 2015, to serve nine years for carjacking. While incarcerated, he was also sentenced in Los Angeles County on March 9, 2018, to serve life with the possibility of parole for attempted first-degree murder with enhancements for the intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury/death, use of a firearm and discharge of a firearm.

On May 29, 2019, Rodriguez also received a life-without-parole sentence from Los Angeles County for kidnap for ransom/extortion where the victim was killed. He also received life sentences for mayhem, extortion by means of force/threats with enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury.

A motive for Rodriguez's killing was unclear.
