A Week Later, Storm-Damaged Roads Remain Closed To Idyllwild

A week after storms washed away a section of one highway and severely damaged another, access remains limited to the community.

IDYLLWILD, CA — More than a week after a storm devastated Riverside County highways leading to the mountain community of Idyllwild, roads remain closed and access is still limited to the area. CHP officials said Thursday evening that both State Route 243 and SR-74 are still affected.

On Feb. 14, rain washed away a large section of SR-243 between Banning and Idyllwild. That stretch of highway remains completely closed "due to extensive damage and roadway loss," the CHP said.

Over on SR-74 near Lake Hemet, the CHP is now staffing a checkpoint through Sunday evening to ensure only residents, cabin occupants, and business owners/employees have access to the Idyllwild-Pine Cove and Mountain Center areas. Motorists must provide proof of residency, occupancy, ownership or rental in order to pass.

"In order to minimally impact the Idyllwild community, the CHP wants to ensure the movement of people and goods having business in Idyllwild continues," the agency said. "Our goal is to restrict visitors who park along the roadway to play in the snow, blocking access for emergency personnel and road repair equipment."

Caltrans officials previously estimated it could take up to a month to repair the 243 where it was damaged.
