BELMONT, CA — A Belmont man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after crashing a BMW off a major thoroughfare and into a local home's backyard this week, police say.

It happened around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday in the area of the 3000 block of Ralston Avenue, according to Belmont Police Capt. Patrick Halleran. Authorities were alerted to a car that had gone over the side of the road.

"Upon arrival, officers found a tan 2015 BMW 328i on it's roof in the back yard of a home in the 2900 block of Belmont Canyon Road," Halleran said in a news release. "Firefighters from Cal Fire responded and were able to extricate the driver and sole occupant of the car, Jose Munoz age 45, of Belmont."

Just prior to the crash, the man was driving eastbound on Ralston Avenue when "his car partially left the roadway," Halleran said.

"The vehicle traveled partially on the shoulder for approximately 200 feet before rolling approximately 20 feet down into the wooded backyard of the home," he said.

An image from the scene, posted above, showed the car landed among several trees and vegetation.

Once Munoz was freed from the vehicle, he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Halleran said. He was arrested without incident.

The incident prompted the temporary closure of one lane of Ralston Avenue, between Christian Drive and Belmont Canyon Road, on Wednesday afternoon.
