Mountain Lion Spotted Near Belmont
The animal was spotted early Monday, county officials say (breaking).

A mountain lion was spotted early Monday morning in San Mateo County, according to county officials. At 12:22 a.m., someone saw a mountain lion in the area of Polhemus Road and Ticonderoga Drive in the Eichler Highlands neighborhood.
County officials are asking anyone in the area to be cautious.
Here is some advice recently offered by San Mateo police on how to keep you and your family safe from mountain lions:

- Do not feed deer. It is illegal in California and it will attract mountain lions.
- If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
- Keep a close watch on small children when hiking or traveling in or about wooded areas.
- If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
