Teen Playing With Fireworks To Blame For Brush Fire: Officials

Cal Fire and area crews contained the blaze to one acre near Carlmont High School in Belmont.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA – A youth playing with fireworks allegedly started a brush fire Friday morning in Belmont, police and fire officials said.

At about 10:50 a.m. police and fire personnel responded to a brush fire on a hill above Carlmont High School at 1400 Alameda de las Pulgas.

Police and firefighters found the fire was burning between the high school and some homes on Hastings Drive.

City officials said firefighters from the city, Cal Fire and San Mateo contained the fire to about one acre.

Lit fireworks were allegedly found in the area.

At about 3:30 p.m. Belmont police interviewed a 14-year-old boy who allegedly told police that he started the fire accidentally when he set off fireworks.

According to police and fire officials, investigators collected some fireworks from the teen and spoke with his parents. Police said they have not decided whether they will ask for the boy to be charged.

The boy's name is not being released because of his age.

Police and firefighters want to remind residents that not only are fireworks illegal in Belmont, they are dangerous.
