Unusual Belmont Break-In: Man Busts Into Restaurant In Broad Daylight, Leaves Empty-Handed, Police Say

BREAKING: Police have released surveillance footage of the bizarre incident in the hopes that someone may recognize the suspect.

BELMONT, CA — Belmont police are asking for help with solving a recent bizarre burglary in town along El Camino Real. The incident happened on July 19 at about 6:50 a.m. in the 1600 block of the roadway, at a local restaurant, according to authorities.

Belmont Police Capt. Patrick Halleran says the suspect rode a bicycle to the restaurant north on El Camino Real, appearing to come from the San Carlos area. He then took a chair from the outdoor seating area, smashed the front window of the eatery and headed inside.

"Once inside, he walked around the business and checked out the cash register, prior to exiting via a door at the north end of the business, but then briefly re-entered the restaurant through the same door and then left again," Halleran said in a news release. "After exiting, he can be seen sitting on the curb in front of the business, next to his bicycle prior to leaving."

"At this time nothing appears to have been taken from the restaurant," he added.

Halleran noted that the break-in was very unusual, since nobody called in a report of the man throwing a chair through the window despite the morning rush hour on El Camino Real.

"You would think with all those cars going down El Camino that somebody would call 911, but nobody did," Halleran said.
