LA's 3-D Photography Royalty Open Art Show in Long Beach: Lemonade Day

. I'm taking the opportunity of this unplanned time off to connect with the many artists and creators in this wonderful city that I love. Come with me on my 100-day odyssey of art and creativity in Long Beach. I call it .

.  Perhaps you need evidence that I can keep a secret.  Well here it is.  I am proud to announce to you today that is opening an art show filled with art by the likes of Barry Rothstein, Larry Kaufmann, Eric Kurland, Ray 3-D Zone and many other 3-D royals.  I've known this since , but waited until Karma told me it was the right time to tell you this.  I'd like to think that Lemonade and Patch helped a bit.

August 29th was Day 59.  I received an email from the LA 3D club about a BBC News report about Glasses-free 3D technology currently under development in South Korea.

I'll give you the link that I received today in Tidbits, along with some links to the Royals of Long Beach.  First, I want to tell you about the 3-Ders who will be visiting us between September 7th and 21st.

And I'll share with you a photo of some family members who were at the ready for the Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, 3-D special sometime in the 80s.  We had to purchase the glasses for 99c at 7-11.  I think I took the photo.

Here's the announcement that came with Barry's free weekly image from his  3dDigitalPhoto site:

"COOL 3-D Event -- Opens Sept 7 thru Sept 21:  I'm pleased to announce that with Vayden Roi Galleries I'm producing a two week 3-D gallery show, "Visual Stereo" at The Bungalow, 727 Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach.  It will kick off on Friday, September 7 with a reception from 7pm to 10pm, showcasing the work of James Comstock, Abe Fagenson, Cassie Kaufman, Lawrence Kaufman, David Kuntz, Eric Kurland, David Lee, Jim Long, John Lucero, Jerry Oldaker, Barry Rothstein, James Staub, Terry Wilson, Ray 3-D Zone, and others.  There will be some food and drink and a live performance by Toaster Music."

Many, many 3-D royals are expected to be onsite for the September 7th opening.  If you want to meet them in person, you should go to visit them then!  No need to drive to Los Angeles to the monthly LA 3D Club meeting, although I know that some of you will choose to make the drive after you see the visual noodles that will be presented there!  Why noodles?  Well, you'll be slurping it all up!

I mentioned these four names because they are the names I know.  The others, I will come to know.

When I joined the LA 3-D club, I had a young baby.  I'd purchased an old stereoscope and some stereo cards at a swap meet and became curious about 3-D.  During my time with the club, I enjoyed several meetings covering cool topics like custom Viewmaster reels, retroactive 3-D (3-Difying your photo after it has been taken).

Larry Kaufmann was President of the club at the time.  Larry has been the name I recognized along the years.  When I was on the "Get the Stuff" team for the Lowell Elementary Spring Auction some years back, I reached out to the club and they donated a 3-D DVD of the club's work that year.

Ray 3-D Zone has drawn over 130 comics.  Ray has done something else that millions of people have seen.  Ray is the artist who drew the 3-D artwork for the McDonalds children's meals.  Ray also donated to the Lowell Elementary Spring Auction that year.

I met Barry Rothstein on Lemonade Day 9.  Larry sent me to Barry.  It turned out that Barry was a prior President of the LA 3-D club.  Very impressively, he was also the photographer whose work was featured on the School's Out! Summer issue of Make: magazine.

Eric Kurland leads the 3-D movie section of the club.  I got his name when I shared a thought with Barry about how cool it would be to have a 3-D movie showing of club members' productions right here in our very own Long Beach.  The club members are always doing movies and I know that Long Beach would love to see them!  There's no plan yet, but perhaps in time!  I talked to Barry as recently as a few days ago about whether this could happen in time for the October Arts Month in Long Beach.  He wants to wait until after the show opens.  Too much going on.  I get that!

Penguin Note: I'd even thought bigger than a local 3-D showing.  I know that there are some large content providers looking to expand their 3-D content.  Wouldn't it be cool for them to collaborate with local 3-D clubs like the LA 3-D club?  These folks are passionate about their art!  Would the content even translate?  I really don't know, but wouldn't it be worth exploring?  Home grown content has such a warm flavor to it, I'm sure that a grassroots following would emerge and grow over time.  I know, perhaps I could help to facilitate this!  If it's one of the four jobs I plan on getting to replace the one job that I left, I know that I could do it!  Four jobs doing what?  I'm not sure.  If you have any ideas, let me know!

  Hawaiian resort hotels have a healthy tolerance for cats, and in exchange undoubtably keep themselves rodent free.  They all seemed to have a clipped ear.  Maybe that marks vaccinated cats, or maybe it's just de rigueur for survivors.  Having picked up some local ahi to make sashimi, the skin and veiny parts provided me highly engaged and motivated feline models.This is an approximated phantogram, and I invite you to print it out so as to view it properly back from an angle, or look at it on an iPad or other tablet devices.  This image and all the past "image of the weeks" can now be found at http://www.3dDigitalPhoto.com/imageoftheweek.asp.
