Lemonade Day 34: Hanging with Taste of Red at Redeye Studio

When life gives you lemons, make Community Lemonade in Long Beach with me. Day 34 - I visited with band Taste of Red at the Redeye Studio.

. I'm taking the opportunity of this unplanned time off to connect with the many artists and creators in this wonderful city that I love. Come with me on my 100-day odyssey of art and creativity in Long Beach. I call it .

John Capito is a young entrepreneur who runs Belmont Music Studio.  The studio is on Belmont Shore's 2nd Street and sits above the Fromex.  You can take lessons from many talented musicians there!  John is also a member of band Taste of Red.

August 4th was Day 34.  I visited Redeye Studio where Taste of Red was laying down some tracks.

I got word that John had a new drum set, so went to check it out.

The band was recording at Redeye Studio.  Redeye Studio is a home-based, home-grown recording studio. Owner Mick was working to capture the music in this, his garage studio.  Hey, check this out, I know Mick's uncle!

Mick gave me the background on the studio we were in.  When you're serious about your music, you want to perform and record some tracks.  He started acquiring equipment to do the recording for his band, Redeye Redemption, and did a lot of experimenting with sound recording software.  He got help from a friend who owns a studio, a neighbor across the street (also in a band), friends here and there and the recording studio evolved.

When you've got an idea, a concept you want to explore, often the first place you start is at home.

Mick was asked to help a friend's band get their EP done.  EP stands for extended play.  More than a single but less than a full album.  Then, Taste of Red.  The network grows.  That's how it works, isn't it?  One tells the other and everyone supports, for themselves, for their friends, for their dreams.

Taste of Red

Taste of Red is pursuing its dream. They've composed original music, have 10 songs to record.  They want their own EP, so that they can get bookings for the act.  They want to perform.

When you want to do something badly enough, you will find a way to do it.

The band is composed of John Capito, Riley Hodges and Tim Bullock, and they were here to get some cuts of their original music on disk.  You may have caught them at di Piazza where they've played a few times before.

Before they got started, John walked me through the different types of drums in his new kit.  It was set up in a sound-proof octagon.  I got to try one of the cymbals, but realize I may need a drum lesson or two!
