Twilight Walk in the 3-D Zone Friday: Lemonade Day

Life gave me a lemon so I'm Making Lemonade. I'm taking the opportunity of this unplanned time off to share stories of the many artists and creators in this wonderful city that I love. Come with me on my 100-day odyssey of art and creativity in Long Beach. I call it The Community Lemonade Game.

I've been wanting to visit the monthly art events in our East Village, North Pine and Bixby Knolls areas.  Whatever weekend it is, there's some fun evening thing to do. 

September 20th was Day 81.  I'm thinking about tomorrow's North Pine Twilight Walk and the last chance to see the 3-D Art Show.

Twilight Walk

The North Pine Twilight Walk is held on the third Friday of each month.  It extends along Pine Street from 3rd through 8th Streets.  In addition to the food at fun, unique places like Kress Markets, 757 Bakery and Mabel's Pralines there are galleries to visit including the Vaden Roi gallery at 727 Pine.  Friday night will be your last chance to see the LA 3-D club's exhibit!

For those of you who do not remember, Barry Rothstein is the only person with permission to publish phantograms.  This is a very special technique in 3-D photography, and it makes the images pop out of the page (or into the page) when viewed with 3-D glasses.  This Friday he will be demonstrating how a phantogram is produced.

At the show you'll be able to see several different types of 3-D prints and even some 3-D paintings!  The most fun will probably be had in the 3-D movie room.  There you will see some of the club works.  These are hobby 3-D movie creators, and they know how to manipulate the scenes so that they take advantage of the 3-D medium!

You may find members of the club there at the show... At the opening I was pleased to talk to long-time 3-D artist, Ray "3-D" Zone.

Ray 3-D Zone

Ray was bitten by the 3-D bug at age 6 and is one of the most accomplished 3-D artists.  Ray has found a way to make his living doing something he loves to do.  Since 1982, Ray has published books about techniques in 3-D film making and 3-D versions of over 130 comics.  One avid fan has Ray's 3-D work tattooed on her back!  3-D glasses are needed to view the image!

Ray has had the pleasure of doing collaborations with comic greats such as Jack Kirby.  For the uninitiated, Jack Kirby was known for his role as creator (or co-creator) of Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Hulk.

The information I found indicates there will be free parking at Anderson's Paint and Hardware at 714 Pine Avenue, but please confirm with the galleries or local spots if you do park there.

• For those of you interested in visiting the club meetings: Meetings of the Stereo Club of Southern California are usually the 3rd Thursday of the month at 7:30 at the Armory Center For the Arts 145 N. Raymond, Pasadena, CA 91103.
