Long Beach Officer Hurt in Fight with Bat Patron

A Long Beach Police officer was hurt over night while responding to a report of an assault at a bar.

A Long Beach Police Department officer was injured in a fight with a bar patron tonight.

The victim was hospitalized for evaluation, Long Beach police Lt. Jeff Berkenkamp said.

The confrontation occurred outside the La Playa bar in the 1800 block of Pacific Avenue around 10:15 p.m., Berkenkamp said.

The officer was responding to a call of an assault at the bar, and was injured during a use of force with the suspect, a man in his late 20s, Berkenkamp said.

Responding officers used a carotid restraint on the suspect, who was also hospitalized as a precaution, Berkenkamp said.
