Long Beach Teen Among 3 Killed When Jaguar Careened into LA River

Police identified the three people killed when their car went airborne and landed in the LA River.

Arriving police used their hands and any tool they could grab in a frantic attempt to clear dirt away from one of the four young people in a crushed 1998 Jaguar XJ that had sped off a Long Beach street and landed in the Los Angeles River, officers said today.

A man believed to be in his 20s also was injured in the crash off the Anaheim offramp of the Long Beach (710) Freeway, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Brian Fisk said.

Alicia Leanne Yanonis, 17, of Long Beach and Fabian Cazares Garcia Jr. and Armando Herrera were killed. They were both 19, but their hometowns were not released. The crash was reported at 4:07 a.m. Friday.

The driver had been speeding in the Jaguar east on Anaheim Street, and had just passed the Long Beach (710) Freeway overpass, then the sports car veered off the roadway and tumbled down a dirt embankment. It went airborne, and hit a concrete bridge support on the west side of the Los Angeles River, according to an accident report from the Long Beach Police Department.

The car came to a rest on its roof on the west bank of the river.

“One car with four passengers ... landed on the rocks by the water on its roof,” Fisk said.

The Long Beach Fire Department dispatched several units to the scene, including an urban search and rescue team, Fisk continued.

“Our units extricated all four victims from the car and one man was transported to a hospital ,” Fisk added. “Unfortunately, the other three victims ... were pronounced dead at the scene.”

The name of the injured man, who suffered critical injuries, was not released. It was not revealed who was driving.
