Baby Born By Emergency C-Section After Car Crash Expected to Survive

SOLANO COUNTY, CA – An infant who was born after a vehicle collision in Vallejo on Wednesday morning is expected to survive, a police lieutenant said Monday.

The infant's 31-year-old mother, who was seven months pregnant, delivered the child by Cesarean section after the collision between her 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck and a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by a 52-year-old Vallejo man, Vallejo police Lt. Michael Nichelini said.

The collision occurred in the area of Mare Island Way and Kentucky Street around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Ford Explorer was traveling south on Mare Island Way when it crossed the center median, rolled over and landed on top of the pickup truck, Nichelini said.

Both drivers suffered significant injuries. The mother, a Vallejo resident, suffered at least one broken femur in the crash but also is expected to survive, Nichelini said.

"There was no real gross negligence, but the Ford Explorer driver appears to be at fault," Nichelini said.

Police are trying to determine if speed or inattention were factors in the crash, he said.

Although the infant survived, it may experience health issues because of the collision, Nichelini said.
