Coroner IDs Man Killed When Vehicle Went Into Waters Off Mare Island

VALLEJO, CA – The Solano County coroner's office has identified a driver who died in a solo-vehicle crash on state Highway 37 near Mare Island early Friday morning as 41-year-old Michael Angelo Vittelli of Vallejo.

Vittelli was driving a 2011 Nissan Versa west on Highway 37 west of the Mare Island exit when the Nissan drifted off the road, down an embankment and into the marsh, the California Highway Patrol said.

Vittelli was found near the shoreline and was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.

A witness saw debris in a lane and a single tail light in the water north of the road, the CHP said.

The CHP arrived at 2:15 a.m. and found the vehicle fully submerged upside down in the water.
