Concord Woman Victim Of Fatal Crash On I-680 In Benicia

BREAKING: The fatal collision involving a Honda sedan and a big rig was reported just after 6 a.m. Friday on the Benicia Bridge.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA -- UPDATED: A collision involving a sedan and big rig turned fatal Friday morning on the Benicia Bridge, claiming the life of a Concord woman, according to the California Highway Patrol. It has been determined that at 6:05 a.m., the 22-year-old was driving a black Honda sedan northbound on Interstate Highway 680 when, just south of the Interstate Highway 780 split, her car collided with the back of a semi truck.

The fatally injured woman was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP reported, without immediately revealing her identity Friday afternoon.

The fatality resulted in the closure Friday morning of I-680 northbound to I-780 westbound until about 8:30 a.m.

According to CHP officials, their initial investigation of the collision indicated the victim was traveling alone in the car in the far right lane of the bridge, approaching a slower-moving truck ahead of her in the same lane. Witnesses told the CHP the Honda rear-ended the semi, then veered to the left across all lanes and into the left concrete wall.

The speed at which the woman was traveling may have been a factor in the collision, CHP officials said, but neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be involved. Preliminary investigation did reveal, however, that the victim may not have been wearing a seatbelt, officials said.
