Marsh Fire in Solano County Caused No Injuries, Property Damage

The fire was reported Saturday near Suisun City.

A marsh fire outside of Suisun City in Solano County Saturday afternoon emitted dark plumes of smoke but did not result in any injuries or property damage, a fire official said.

Suisun Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Alfred Abruzzini said fire crews responded to a vegetation fire in the Suisun Marsh around 2:15 p.m. Abruzzini said the fire was surrounded by water on three sides and a Union Pacific railroad track on the fourth side.

Because the fire was in a marsh area, Abruzzini said the fire was basically burning on top of the water. He said firefighters performed a controlled burn in order to extinguish the fire more quickly.

The mostly uninhabited area sometimes hosts duck clubs, but Abruzzini said there were no injuries reported and no structures were impacted by the blaze. The fire was under control by around 6 p.m., he said.

The fire drew a lot of attention because of the unusually dark-colored smoke, which is most often indicative of a structure fire, Abruzzini said.

Tule leaves and blackberry bushes were fueling the fire, and Abruzzini said some oils in the vegetation produced the black smoke. The flames consumed somewhere between 20 to 25 acres of vegetation, he said.

Roughly 20 firefighters responded to the blaze. Abruzzini said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
