The gunfire was reported in the 1500 block of East Fourth Street around 7:05 p.m. and after speaking to neighbors, police determined which apartment was targeted, police Lt. Frank Hartig said.
The suspect also fired several shots into an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot of the apartment complex, Hartig said.

The 36-year-old woman and her children ages 13, 11 and 1 were inside the apartment when the male suspect knocked on the metal front screen door, which was ajar, Hartig said.
When the woman looked out the dining room window, the suspect fired a shot from a handgun toward the victim and as he fled, he fired several more rounds into the unoccupied vehicle, according to Hartig.

The suspect was seen entering the passenger side of a white vehicle that drove east on East O Street, Hartig said.
No one inside the apartment was injured.
“This appears to be an isolated incident and we are working to establish a motive and identify all involved parties,” Hartig said.
Police are investigating whether the woman and suspect knew each other and if she was able to recognize him because he was wearing a hoodie pulled over his head, Hartig said.
Police did not recover any bullet casings outside of the apartment but found a bullet fragment in the apartment. The car will be taken apart to recover any bullets inside it, according to Hartig.
