The Nissan was traveling north on Sonoma Boulevard when it struck a shopping cart and the woman on the bus stop bench, Sgt. Michael Nichelini said. The car then hit a utility pole and the five pedestrians who were walking north on Sonoma Boulevard, Nichelini said.
The pedestrians were dragged by the vehicle as it reentered the roadway and came to rest in the left lane of traffic, Nichelini said.
Two pedestrians were pinned under the car and three were carried and thrown from the vehicle, Nichelini said.
A passing tow truck lifted the car off the two women trapped under the Nissan. Navarro died at the scene and the other injured victims were taken to hospitals.
