📰 News we're reading

1. Plagiarism Issues Prompt UC Berkeley Officials To Ban AI At Law School: Report (patch.com) — UC Berkeley School of Law is sharply restricting student use of AI tools after instructors discovered they were being used to complete coursework, raising plagiarism concerns. Starting this summer, most students will be barred from using AI for any credited written work, while limited advanced courses will still teach ethical and legal AI use for future legal practice.

2. New fees, staff cuts: Berkeley school district now has an early plan to balance its budget (berkeleyside.org) — Berkeley Unified is closing a multi‑million‑dollar deficit with a draft plan that adds new transportation fees, cuts 21 non‑teaching jobs and trims central‑office costs while preserving college prep programs. District leaders expect more state revenue after the governor’s revised budget, but warn of longer‑term gaps, especially for high‑need students, as they refine the plan before June budget adoption.

3. Berkeley stands by strict rules for fire-safe homes as inspections ramp up (berkeleyside.org) — Berkeley is moving ahead with strict new wildfire ember-proofing rules in the hills, with city inspections ramping up in June and financial help available for vulnerable residents. The EMBER ordinances are sparking a recall effort against Councilmember Brent Blackaby, even as Firewise neighborhood groups and UC Berkeley volunteers organize major vegetation cleanups and offer free assessments to help homeowners comply and reduce wildfire risk.

4. Bay Area Restaurants Join 2026 Michelin Guide (sanfranciscopost.com) — Berkeley restaurants have joined San Francisco and Oakland spots in the latest additions to the 2026 California Michelin Guide, bringing fresh recognition to local kitchens. While the article doesn’t name specific Berkeley venues, it highlights how Bay Area restaurants are earning attention amid high rents, labor costs, and shifting dining habits, making this recognition especially valuable for East Bay establishments.

5. Take a trip to Vanessa Hua's "Coyoteland" (capradio.org) — A new novel by Vanessa Hua is set in a fictional suburb in the East Berkeley hills, using that community’s progressive self-image and wildfire risk to explore race, class, and belonging. In a recent interview, Hua describes drawing on pandemic-era upheaval, college admissions pressure, and even a coyote’s perspective to examine how Berkeley-area neighbors live up to—or fall short of—their ideals.
