Weather forecast:
1. Man Accused Of Killing Girlfriend At Berkeley Apartments (patch.com) — Berkeley residents are learning more about a suspected homicide at an apartment on the 1900 block of California Street, where a 37-year-old local woman was found dead. Police say they identified her boyfriend, 28-year-old Damarcus Jones, as the suspect, arrested him in Dixon, and have turned evidence over to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office while the cause of death is still being determined.
2. City makes safety upgrades after deadly crashes in Elmwood, North Berkeley (berkeleyside.org) — Berkeley is rolling out concrete safety upgrades on Claremont Avenue, Marin Avenue, and several North Berkeley intersections after multiple fatal pedestrian crashes. Expect new crosswalks, lane-narrowing features, bulb-outs, and occasional lane closures and parking restrictions through mid-June as the city tries to slow drivers and better protect people walking and biking.
3. Who Counts: The Long History of Data and Power (berkeley.edu) — UC Berkeley’s Digital Humanities Summer Program is hosting a six-evening series on how data and AI intersect with power, ethics, and race, featuring scholar Roopika Risam. Berkeley-area residents connected to tech, academia, or activism may find these discussions especially relevant for understanding responsible data use and ethical AI in their own work and communities.
4. What We're Reading: Why Young Entrepreneurs Are Flocking to Britain's Old-School Markets (reasonstobecheerful.world) — A reading roundup briefly spotlights Berkeley, where a new policy now requires emissions-reducing upgrades whenever a home is sold, part of the city’s push toward net-zero by 2045. The rest of the piece points readers to unrelated stories on markets in Britain, homelessness in Denver, cash aid for pregnant women, and water recycling abroad.
