• Berkeley, a Look Back: Young defeats Richardson to be GOP candidate (mercurynews.com subscription) — A century ago, Berkeley residents watched two hometown politicians, both with deep UC Berkeley and local ties, battle for the Republican nomination for California governor. This historical column also revisits 1926 decisions that shaped today's Civic Center Park, South and West Berkeley civic buildings, and even a dramatic Berkeley streetcar crash and nearby police shooting in Emeryville.
• NSF invests $37.5 million in Quantum Leap Challenge Institute for Quantum Computation, led by UC Berkeley (berkeley.edu) — UC Berkeley is leading a multi-institutional Quantum Leap Challenge Institute that just secured a renewed $37.5 million National Science Foundation grant for advanced quantum computing research. The five-year funding will support work on quantum computation, basic quantum science, and new quantum technologies across California, with Berkeley at the hub of the collaboration.
