Berkeley Police Schedules DUI Checkpoint For Thursday (patch.com) — Berkeley drivers should be aware that police will run a DUI checkpoint on Shattuck Avenue near Parker Street from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., targeting alcohol, drugs, and marijuana impairment. Officers emphasize that many legal medications can still make driving unsafe, and a first DUI in Berkeley can cost about $13,500 plus a license suspension.

City of Berkeley sued for withholding security information about TPUSA event (dailycal.org) — The City of Berkeley is being sued for allegedly withholding public records about security planning and police response to a 2025 Turning Point USA event at UC Berkeley. A free-speech nonprofit says the city missed legal deadlines and released only minimal emails, while the case continues in closed City Council sessions ahead of a December court conference.
   

3. Berkeley electric ferry project gets expedited judicial review (workboat.com) — Berkeley's long-planned electric ferry terminal at the old Municipal Pier just cleared a key hurdle, with Gov. The city is still designing the $104 million project, which would rebuild the pier, add a ferry terminal and plaza at the Marina, and eventually link Berkeley to San Francisco and Larkspur.
   

4. 'Like a horror movie.' Man following UC Berkeley student scales apartment complex gate (latimes.com subscription) — A UC Berkeley student was followed into her apartment complex at night by a man who climbed the locked gate and pulled a long object, later believed to be a barbecue lighter, prompting fears about safety near campus. After a delayed police response, Berkeley officers ultimately used an outstanding warrant to jail the suspect, who has prior arrests, leaving the student and neighbors newly anxious about living in Berkeley.
   

5. Fraying cables caused big light fixtures to fall in 2 classrooms at Berkeley elementary school (berkeleyside.org) — Rosa Parks Elementary in Berkeley recently had two large ceiling light fixtures crash to the floor after their aging support cables frayed, though no students were present or injured. The district has since replaced all support wiring, added seismic bracing, and shut off ceiling fans while inspections continue, but some families remain concerned about how long the problem went unnoticed.
