Berkeley Shooting Leaves Man Seriously Wounded
Five schools in the area were asked to secure their perimeters following the Friday afternoon shooting.
BERKELEY, CA — A 21-year-old man was shot and seriously wounded in South Berkeley Friday afternoon, according to Berkeley police.
Officers were called to reports of gunfire near Derby and Grant streets around 1:15 p.m. The callers also reported someone was on the ground, according to Berkeley Police Department Lt. Peter Hong.
When officers arrived, they found a 21-year-old with serious gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital, and Hong said he didn't know what condition the man was in later Friday afternoon.

Nobody had been arrested as of 2:45 p.m., Hong said. He said drivers should avoid the area of Derby and Grant.
Authorities didn't immediately release more information about the shooting.

Five schools in the area - Berkeley High School, Berkeley Technology Academy, Longfellow Middle School, Washington Elementary School and the King Child Development Center - were asked to secure their perimeters, according to Berkeley Unified School District spokesman Charles
Burress.
"All sites were able to resume normal operations within about an hour or less," Burress said in a statement. School officials don't believe students were involved in the shooting, according to Burress.
