**League of Women Voters to Mark 60th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act with Community Gathering at UC Berkeley**

BERKELEY, Calif. — The League of Women Voters of Berkeley, Albany & Emeryville (LWVBAE), in partnership with the League of Women Voters of the United States, will host a community gathering on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at UC Berkeley’s E. Pauley Ballroom located at 2495 Bancroft Way Berkeley CA 94720 to commemorate the **60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965**.

The event is one of several actions taking place in cities across the country, coordinated by the national League, to mark the historic legislation President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law on August 6, 1965 — legislation widely regarded as the single most consequential step toward building an inclusive, multi-racial democracy in the United States.

The Berkeley gathering will feature live music, refreshments, speakers, and community voter engagement, offering attendees a chance to reflect on the ongoing struggle for voting rights and to connect with local democracy work.

"The Voting Rights Act didn't happen by accident — it happened because people organized, marched, and refused to accept a democracy that excluded them," said Kandea Mosley Gandhi, LWVBAE Co-President. "Sixty years later, we're gathering to honor that history and recommit to protecting the right to vote."

The public is invited to attend. More information and RSVP details are available at:
